Incredible Hulk #181 is written by Billenger and drawn byurate artist John Byrne. This series is the second of a two-part crossover event between the hit television series “Hulk” and the long-running comic book series of the same title. The first half of the Avengers vs. X-Men crossover event saw the death of Dr. Alexander Grey, an alternate personality of Cyclops, and a debut of a new super-villain known as Kang. The second half featured a story that diverged from the original, as the Avengers battled a new Skrull who sought to destroy the X-Men.
This storyline took a ton of twists and turns that left me desperately wanting more. This is a huge understatement, but I’m sure you can expect that to be the case with this arc. This is one of the most intense storylines in the entire run of the Incredible Hulk book. Byrne and Billenger created a new character, called Ravage, who would eventually be known as one of the most horrific villains in the Marvel Universe. What I don’t know is how they planned for this character to deal with Banner, since it seems that the two characters simply don’t get along.
This villain has the ability to duplicate himself and form an army of mindless monstrosities. He was also given some advanced technology that gave him the capability of destroying any material he touched. This man, who bears a resemblance to Doctor Doom, made a threat against the X-Men and the Avengers. What I find interesting is that the writers didn’t explain exactly how much of a difference his abilities made on the Hulk or Cyclops. That is why I call it a lack of clarity.
The storyline started out strong with a series of fantastic one-liners that made you laugh and smile with delight. The humor was subtle but engaging, allowing you to enjoy the witty dialogue instead of trying to put it across in a dramatic way. Issues #1-#3 had Banner battling the Hulk while attempting to convince him to join the Avengers.
Unfortunately, issues #4 & #5 showed a rather feeble attempt to continue this feud. They featured Dr. Crawford, who created a serum to give Gamma Orb to Banner. This was done while Banner was being brainwashed by the Red Skull. Ultimately, the story line focused more on Banner trying to control his mental faculties rather than do something about his physical condition. This was a bit surprising because the first few pages of the comic seemed to hint that this aspect of the Incredible Hulk would be very well drawn.
One of the biggest complaints I have with this version of the Hulk is that he is no longer able to turn into the Hulk. This is a flaw that shouldn’t be overlooked because it leads to a number of frustrating issues. The writers didn’t take the time to explain why this happened, which is why I feel that it is an unintentional mistake. It would have been nice to see a reason as to why Banner is unable to turn into the Hulk. Another issue I have is that after suffering Brain Invaders, he has no memory of the ordeal. I guess you can chalk this up to the character’s age, but I wish they had given a little more thought to this aspect of the series.
