The Incredible Hulk Watch on HBO Max

After years of being lost in limbo, The Incredible Hulk has finally found a new home on HBO Max. The oft-forgotten second film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe still has a few issues to work out with rights, but it should still prove enjoyable for fans of the green behemoth.

The movie begins with scientist Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) living in exile after an experiment in gamma radiation turns him into a monster when he loses his temper. He’s constantly searching for a cure while hiding from his old boss Gen. Ross (William Hurt), who wants to use the irradiated blood of his soldier friend Emil Blonsky to create an army of super-strong soldiers.

But when his irradiated blood is used on an unwilling test subject, Blonsky becomes a creature so monstrous that it can’t be stopped by even the most powerful military force. With a little more action than Ang Lee’s arty 2003 take on the character, this movie delivers plenty of big green fun.

Edward Norton reportedly re-wrote scenes every day to ensure that his performance matched the intensity of the script. It’s an effective characterization, and the movie has its share of operatic fight sequences and amazing special effects. But it lacks the vision and style that made Iron Man so special, or the clarity of purpose that Christopher Nolan brought to Batman Begins.

It’s a summertime action movie that’s designed to make money, not revolutionize the genre, and it does its job well enough. But there are better movies out there that take a lot more chances than The Incredible Hulk does.
